In the summer of 1963, evil began to sweep across Manchester, England, and the surrounding area. During the period between July 1963 and October 1965, five children between the ages of 10 and 17 were murdered. Some were buried in shallow graves in Saddleworth Moor. Four of the children had been sexually abused.

The victims were Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey, and Edward Evans.

Their killers, known as the “Moors Murderers” were Myra Hindley and Ian Brady.

How did a woman become a participant in what was considered one of the most depraved murder sprees in history? Here is what we know.

Myra Hindley was born in Crumpsall on July 23, 1942, to Bob and Nellie Hindley, but she was raised in Gorton, a working-class area of Manchester. Their house was small and ill-tended. Hindley slept in a single bed beside her parents as a child. Her father was an alcoholic who subjected her to routine beatings. When another daughter, Maureen, was born in August 1946, things became even more strained for the family. About a year later, when Hindley was 5 years old, she was sent to live with her grandmother.
