51-year-old Gretchen Anthony’s friends and family were understandably concerned in March 2020 when they received text messages from her that she’d contracted COVID-19 and would be quarantining while recovering from the virus that was beginning to take such a toll on the masses. They grew even more concerned when she didn’t answer or return their calls to check on her in the days that followed. The fact that she was alone — her daughter wasn’t at home at the time, and her divorce from her second husband had been finalized only a few weeks before — meant she could potentially be very ill and have no one to help her.

The only communication they initially had from her was just the simple explanation they’d received from her via text:

“Good morning. Tested positive for coronavirus early this morning. That means I have to stay here for at least two weeks . . .”

Like other family members, Gretchen’s daughter had also received a text message identical to the one telling everyone else she had tested positive for the coronavirus and had to quarantine for two weeks.
